Christmas Decorating Trends 2013

Usually way before you are even thinking about Christmas, I've already been decorating for the season. Decorating for several of my clients, that is. Because I have many clients that are retail stores, they insist every year that Christmas go up before Thanksgiving. (I'm just the messenger people.)

And every year, as I teeter on ladders and spend hundreds of dollars on Christmas decorations, people will say, "Christmas before Thanksgiving? You've got to be kidding!"

No kidding here.

It doesn't bother me too much since Christmas is my favorite time of year. The benefit of decorating and shopping early is that I get to see what the new trends are for the season. Pinecones are still the rage and look beautiful in the above blue and white wreath.

This year, with all our DIY efforts, we've taken to getting creative, like with this simple, but tasteful twist on the advent calendar from Real Simple magazine:

Pottery Barn embraced the cloche trend and turned it into a Christmas ornament; if you like more traditional ornaments, you'll love Ballard Design's mercury glass ornaments; for us decorating fanatics who love to try new things, we'll give these adorable owl string of lights from Anthropologie a try.

As much as we're willing to try something new, we might still long for items that remind us of our own childhood Christmases like this Santa ornament from the tree (and blog) of Kelly Ash.

I remember this kind of felted Santa from when I was a kid! How adorable!

Whatever your style, there's something for everyone out there in the Christmas decorating world. And if you can't find it, then make it!

How are you going to decorate this year? What's your decorating style when it comes to Christmas?

Wow, I never thought of 'trends' with seasonal decor... I just decorate with my collection of seasonal decorations that I grow a little each year. I'll start keeping my eye open now and paying attention.

I must admit I'm one of those people who doesn't care to see Christmas decor out before Thanksgiving, but I think that's mostly because Christmas is my busy season. I am a booking agent for Santa Claus (Yes, you read that right ;) ), so I savor ever last day of fall and the Thanksgiving holidays before my crazy time.

My Christmas decorating style is hodgepodge. I have some things I bought, some things my mom gave us, some things the kids made...it all sort of goes together. I like it because most of our things have some sort of story or sentimental meaning (even if they aren't technically the most beautiful things)....but I'd love to have that pinecone wreath!! --Lisa

Hi Lisa! I think until the kids are much older, it's going to be hodgepodge in our home too. Although since we moved to the lake house, I've been more into the rustic trend with Christmas decorating. This is pretty easy especially with Pinterest!

I have a very mixed matched Christmas style. I have tons of Snowmen decorations but that's about it for a theme. I think it all goes together well in the end. And I don't care about decorations before Thanksgiving, I already decorated the yard for Christmas. The inside will be done after Thanksgiving though.

Allison, just dropped by your blog…how sweet, "twingles!" I'm still debating what to put outside. I change it every year, but I try to use what I already own! Thanks for stopping by, enjoy your decorating and have a Happy Thanksgiving! :)

We actually decorate the night before Thanksgiving. It's our "thing." And we have a cathedral ceiling so we get a 13 or 14 foot tree. The decorating style is very eclectic, you could say. From various parts of all of our lives.

I have a hodgepodge of ornaments mostly received as gifts which for me is the best kind of trend. If I were to buy ornaments I do like that felt Santa. BTW - the Kohl's store closest to my house puts out their holiday decorations the beginning of November.
