Planning A Surprise Getaway

I'm having an internal debate about whether to plan a surprise getaway with Husband. There's this fine line when it comes to saving money and living a fulfilled life. If I wait until we have the money, will we even be able to go? Will the money go to a new fridge, a child's needs or a possible emergency?

I talked to someone I work with and she said "I don't want to be 80, using a walker at the Grand Canyon! What kind of vacation is that?!"

Our last getaway was a wedding in Chicago. It was so wonderful.
I totally get it.

So I'm perusing the deals on the internet, giddy with excitement about this potential trip. Googling "Two night three day cheap getaways," (hoping we don't end up in Tijuana.)

Where? When? How? My first three choices were: Philadelphia, because Husband likes history; somewhere in Maine, because I love the east coast and Seattle, because it's far enough to fly to and I've never been there, even though I lived in Vancouver for a year.

Seattle, yes, birthplace of my beloved Starbucks, the Space Needle and Pike Place Market that looks amazing. I've also found a cool hotel, I'm kayak-ing, hot-wiring etc. all the airfares and dreaming of all the cool places to see and foods to eat (thanks to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives!)

Husband knows I'm planning something, he just doesn't know what exactly... so do you have any ideas? Have you been to Seattle, can you recommend places to visit? I would love to hear your ideas!

  1. How awesome. I love that you're doing it. Money, schmoney, right? Yes, it's the responsible thing to put away anything extra for emergencies, but really, isn't it just as important to the family to have quality time with your spouse? The hubs and I haven't been anywhere overnight together in about 4 years. And before that was our honeymoon. With three kids, we're lucky to get even a couple hours alone.
You're gonna have a blast. I've been to Seattle several times, since it's only about a 4-hour drive from Portland, but not in over 10 years. And I've never been to the space needle. Pike Street Market is awesome, though. You'll love it. Have fun!!!!

Every year since we've been married my husband and I have taken a trip for our anniversary. . .sometimes it's a two hour drive to San Antonio and once we went to the Bahamas. It's just always good to getaway and reconnect without the kids! So, in light of that I'll share some of the places we've been and maybe one of these options works for your and your budget:

    1. Seattle (last year we flew in to Seattle for a long weekend and one day we drove across the border to Canada. Be sure to take the Chuckanut Highway for amazing scenic views.)

    2. San Francisco (Fisherman's wharf is cool, we also walked up Mulholland Drive and walked across the Golden Gate Bridge! Alcatraz is also there to tour.)

    3. Napa Valley (we did the wine train tour, it was awesome!)

    4. Miami (beach, nightlife, Hotel Biltmore is cool place to visit)

    5. San Antonio (we did a couples spa and stayed on the Riverwalk)

So many more places that I won't clog your comment section with any further LOL! But just spending the time together to rekindle that romance is what's important, not the destination. Happy Anniversary (early) and have an amazing time wherever you end up!

(FYI- Tracie visiting from phenomenalmama.com via SITS can't figure out how to get my correct domain to show up in the comments!)

    1. Hey Tracie! Thanks for all those ideas. I promised Husband one day we will go to Canada! I heard Napa Valley is amazing but expensive, someone else suggested Sonoma Valley.

(Sorry about the trouble with commenting, I switched templates and it will take awhile for me to work out all the bugs...)

  4. OOo, I am headed to Seattle for the first time ever next weekend! I am very excited. I think that idea is the best, personally, but I have something special for Maine, too. Either way it will be so fun!
